How Much Do Removalists Cost in Sydney?

Written by the Sydney Movers & Packers crew

Most Sydney removalists charge by the hour, so the real question is what sits on top of the hourly rate. Here are our current rates by truck size, what is included, what adds to the price, and how to check any quote yourself.

What do removalists charge per hour in Sydney?

Our rates are per hour for two movers and a truck, plus GST. The price depends on the size of the truck, because a bigger truck carries more in one trip. The rate is the same on weekdays and weekends, and we bill in half hour blocks.

Each truck also has a call out fee. It is added on top of the hourly rate and stated upfront, never added later.

7.5 tonne2$130$10028 m³2 to 3 bedroom home
10 tonne2$160Stated in your quote40 m³3 to 4 bedroom home
12 tonne2$180$15055 m³Large home or office

What is included in the hourly rate?

Blankets, a trolley, a dolly and straps are included. If you need cling wrap, it is $50 per roll, and boxes are priced by how many you need. Weekend work costs the same as weekday work, so there is no weekend surcharge to plan around. We do not add a travel fee anywhere in Greater Sydney.

What can add to the price?

Three things move the final number more than anything else.

Stairs. The first flight, up to 15 steps, is included. Each additional flight adds $10 an hour. A lift does not add any charge.

Distance from the truck to your door. If the truck has to park more than 50 metres away, the rate goes up by $10 an hour for each additional 50 metres. Underground or rear parking at an apartment block is the usual cause.

Special items. Pianos and other large or fragile items are quoted separately, based on the item.

How do I work out my own quote?

You can check any quote with four numbers: the hourly rate, the number of hours, the call out fee and any extras. This example uses our 4.5 tonne rate. It shows the arithmetic only and does not predict how long your move will take.

Four hours at $110 is $440. Add the $80 call out fee and the subtotal is $520 before GST. Now suppose the move needs one extra flight of stairs. That adds $10 an hour, so the hourly rate becomes $120, the hourly part becomes $480, and the subtotal is $560 before GST.

If you cannot repeat the sum from what is written on a quote, ask for the rate, the call out fee, the billing blocks and any extra charges in writing.

How can I keep the cost down?

Have everything packed and ready before the crew arrives, because the clock runs while they wait. Clear pathways and take large furniture apart where you can. If you live in an apartment, book the lift and ask where the truck can park, so it is close to your door. Book at least a week ahead to get the date and time you want.

Is my move insured?

Every move carries transit insurance, and we hold $20 million public liability cover. If you need to make a claim, there is a $1,100 excess and you will need the original receipt for the item. Please report any damage to us in writing within 7 days of the move.

Takeaway

Your price is the hourly rate for your truck, plus a call out fee, plus any stair or distance extras, plus GST. Ask for every part in writing and check you can do the sum yourself.
